Jalan Sultan

Another road with a name that reflect the used-to-be royal grounds of Kampong Gelam is Jalan Sultan. Though it is a bit ‘out of the way’ from the usual visitors’ trail, it does play an important part in making the precinct a unique place.

We have 2 prominent shopping centres catering to wholesale businesses here – Textile Centre and Sultan Plaza. Since the 70s, these are the places where retailers go to get their goods for sale. Recently, a new shopping centre, City Gate, was completed which gives a contrasting look against the retro-looking building (Sultan Plaza). For heritage lovers, you can take stroll down and marvelled at the architecture of Clover Hotel and The Sultan Hotel. Each has its own unique conservation style which emit the essence of Kampong Gelam. And of course, the The Heritage Shop where you can find walk down memory lane and perhaps find a childhood memento for keeps.
